All-New Nissan Patrol Y63 Confirmed for New Zealand

What Christchurch and Canterbury drivers can expect from Nissan’s next-generation flagship 4x4

A new generation of Nissan Patrol is on its way to New Zealand. The all-new Y63 Patrol is scheduled to reach local showrooms in the first quarter of 2027, bringing a new powertrain, more advanced chassis technology and a substantially upgraded cabin to one of Nissan’s longest-running nameplates.

For Christchurch drivers, the Patrol has always occupied a distinctive position. It is large enough for family travel, capable enough for towing and high-country trips, and comfortable enough for long days on Canterbury roads. The Y63 retains that broad purpose while moving the Patrol into a more modern and premium era.

A new twin-turbo V6 for the next generation

The all-new Patrol replaces the previous model’s naturally aspirated V8 with a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine. Nissan has confirmed outputs of 317kW and 700Nm, paired with a new nine-speed automatic transmission.

Those figures represent more power and substantially more torque than the outgoing engine. Peak torque also arrives earlier in the rev range, which should make the Patrol feel more responsive in everyday driving and provide useful flexibility when towing, climbing or travelling with a full load.

The engine draws on Nissan’s GT-R engineering experience and includes a scavenger oil pump designed to maintain lubrication on steep inclines and off-camber terrain. It is a technical detail that reflects the Patrol’s continued focus on genuine off-road use rather than appearance alone.

Built for Canterbury travel

Canterbury can ask very different things of a vehicle in a single journey. A trip may begin in central Christchurch, continue across open highways and finish on an unsealed road near a farm, lake or high-country station. Patrol buyers also regularly need space for passengers and luggage, along with the ability to tow a boat, caravan or trailer.

The Y63 has been designed to make those mixed journeys more comfortable. Selected models will offer adaptive air suspension and electronically controlled dampers. The suspension can raise the vehicle in off-road mode to improve clearance and lower it when parked to make passenger entry and loading easier. At highway speeds, it can also lower the body to support stability, comfort and efficiency.

A more advanced and comfortable cabin

The new Patrol’s cabin represents one of the largest changes. Depending on the final New Zealand grade, available features may include dual 14.3-inch displays, a head-up display, a 12-speaker Klipsch audio system, massage functionality for the front seats and zero-gravity seating for first- and second-row passengers.

Nissan has also introduced biometric cooling on selected models. When activated, the system monitors passenger temperatures as occupants enter and adjusts the climate settings to help establish a comfortable cabin. Final New Zealand specifications and grade availability will be confirmed closer to launch.

Seventy-five years of Patrol capability

The Patrol name dates back to 1951 and has become closely associated with durability, long-distance travel and off-road capability. The Y63 is not simply a technology update. It is intended to preserve that established character while adding the refinement expected from a modern flagship SUV.

That balance should be particularly relevant in Canterbury, where a premium family vehicle may also need to deal with winter travel, towing and weekends beyond sealed roads.
